Buffalo Gnats

We are getting reports of buffalo gnats in large numbers in the Springfield area. They are common most springs in the northern two-thirds of Illinois. These are tiny, black biting flies that do not bite through clothing, avoid shady areas, and are repelled with DEET, picloram, and soybean oil insect repellents sold as Off, Cutters, and Bite Blocker.
